Project Description
The South African National Roads Agency completed an initial ITS Pilot Project deployment, using Intelligent Control Suite on the Ben Schoeman Highway which links the cities of Johannesburg and Pretoria. This section of road is the busiest road in Africa. Intelligent Incident was used to manage all the traffic incidents on the roadways. Intelligent Maintenance was utilized to control all the maintenance activity on the roadways producing job cards for all maintenance jobs.
Intelligent Devices provided the software and integration services. This project connected to and controlled all the ITS field devices including, DMS Signs, Ramp Meters, Lane Control Signs, Vehicle Detector Stations, Remote Traffic Microwave Sensors (RTMS) and Warning Beacon. The system also provided Travel Time Prediction and Incident Detection. The system reported all alarms from field devices as well as alarms for the Digital Video Recorder (DVR).
This project included integration to the existing MICROS loop counting stations through a NTCIP proxy server. All information from the Traffic Management Software was interfaced to the public facing “i-traffic” website.
